In either a front end or rear end collision, it is possible for the fuel lines to crack or break and leak fuel. In the event the fuel lines were leaking, it would be unsafe for the fuel pump to continue operating. Many vehicle manufacturers have designed an inertia switch that shuts off the fuel pump when a vehicle comes to a sudden stop. This inertia switch is usually located near the airbag module and has a reset button. If the button on the Fuel Pump Shut Off Switch suddenly switches off without being in a collision, it can be pressed to reset.
Have the Fuel Pump Shut Off Switch replaced if it resets more than twice. This usually indicates that the switch is faulty as the engine dies while driving. If the vehicle has been involved in an accident that caused the Fuel Pump Shut Off Switch to turn off, reset the switch once you have confirmed the fuel system doesn’t have any leaks.
If a faulty Fuel Pump Shut Off switch is not replaced, your vehicle may turn off while driving in traffic, causing a hazard to you and the vehicles around you.
