Horn Switch Replacement

What is the Horn Switch all about?

The horn switch is a primitive buzzer; when pressed, a complete circuit directs power to the horn itself. The horn is a straightforward device, working off a solenoid that has the negative side grounded to the frame of your car. When positive voltage is distributed, the solenoid pulls it in and the horn sounds. If the horn switch is not working, the horn will not sound if pressed. Alternatively, if the horn button fails or is “stuck,” the horn will sound continuously until the fuse overloads and burns out.

Keep in mind:

  • If your horn switch doesn’t work, you have no way of alerting other drivers of potential dangers.
  • You are required by law to have a working horn in your vehicle.

How it's done:

  • The vehicle battery is disconnected
  • The defective horn switch is removed
  • The new horn switch is installed
  • The battery is reconnected
  • The repair is verified and the vehicle horn is tested for proper operation

Our recommendation:

The horn operation is checked on every safety inspection and should also be checked on every comprehensive vehicle inspection. However, the horn switch itself is not specifically checked nor does it receive regular service. If the horn stops working, have one of our expert mechanics inspect and replace the horn switch if necessary.

What common symptoms indicate you may need to replace the Horn Switch?

  • Horn makes no sound when pressed
  • Horn sounds all the time
  • There is a clicking sound when car horn is pressed
  • Horn fuse is burnt

How important is this service?

If your horn doesn’t work, your car will not pass a state motor vehicle inspection. Your horn is a safety device that allows you to alert other motorists to potential danger. If your horn doesn’t work, have one of our expert mechanics diagnose and correct the problem.
